What counts as a medical misdiagnosis?

A misdiagnosis can be made by any medical professional and they’re categorised into two main types:

  1. Incorrect or missed diagnosis – this is when a medical professional diagnoses you with the wrong condition, or fails to diagnose any problem at all. It can lead to incorrect medication or treatment and, often, a deterioration in your health and mental wellbeing.
  2. Late diagnosis – this is when a condition is not diagnosed at the earliest opportunity. This can often cause a delay in further tests and treatments, and may have affected your prognosis.

One of the most common conditions to be misdiagnosed is cancer. Not only are there more than 200 types of the disease, the symptoms are often very similar to other – less serious – illnesses. As such, they can be difficult to diagnose – and delays in treatment can be particularly devastating.

Other conditions that can lead to serious complications if they aren’t diagnosed early enough include:

  • Cauda Equina syndrome
  • Meningitis
  • Appendicitis
  • Subarachnoid haemorrhage
  • Ectopic pregnancy

Please keep in mind, this is not an exhaustive list. Absolutely any condition or illness can be misdiagnosed. But whatever the nature of your experience. And whichever type of error led to your misdiagnosis – whether it was a failure to request tests, a misinterpreted scan or something else – we should be able to help, here at Injury Lawyers Direct.
